Hi, welcome to another episode of Hot Takes.
Rachel Reeves has had mixed messages on the economy today.
There is, strangely and surprisingly, and it caught a lot of people off guard, a slight uplift in Britain's economy in terms of growth, half a percent.
   Nobody really knows why.
   It wasn't expected to be.
It's expected to either continue to shrink and go into recession, or at the very least just be 0.1%, but it actually managed to get half a percent.
But don't let that fool you.
Don't think that that is going to be anything like good news.
It is literally a blip because Britain's job market is in freefall.
   It's destroyed.
It is falling and falling fast.
British job market is now in its worst slump since 2020 at the height of COVID.
   And we haven't got COVID.
And this has only happened in the last month.
And, of course, tax hikes are coming in now.
More and more people have been made unemployed.
And according to KPMG, the big accountants, and the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, the number of job seekers is surging at its fastest rate since December 2020.
And for job seekers, what we mean here is the unemployed.
   There's a collapse in vacancies.
   We reported that before.
Vacancies are down to maybe 30% of what they were.
And, of course, this whole now raft of layoffs happening left, right and centre, including within local and national government.
   At least it's been announced.
The report points the finger at Labour's business bashing measures, warning it is unlikely we will see an improvement.
And if the government doesn't reconsider, then it will reconsider, then it is going to get far, far worse.
This is according to their CEO, Neil Carberry.
And he came out and said, it is even more important now that government reconsiders the scale of rising costs of employment after this week's rise in national insurance.
A full review of the impact of Employment Rights Bill and the changes to simplify compliance costs would be welcomed by businesses across the country.
Meanwhile, shops suffered a 5.4% drop in footfall in March compared to the same month last year.
And half of all households are holding back on spending.
Now, that little half a percent blip on growth will be wiped out with the news that unemployment is rising and that footfall in shops is down 5%.
It doesn't matter what the gaslighting of the government is, doesn't matter what they continue to say.
It's going to be a long, dark four years or possibly 10, because who knows how long it's going to take to repair the nine months of labour.
   Deep breaths.
We're going down a very dark rabbit hole.
   Thanks very much.
   Bye.

7.@EdVanMeyer(2025-04-12 09:07:06)
The cost of Net Zero is one factor.
8.@GaryJG91(2025-04-12 09:07:17)
My work has just let several blokes go. Can't afford to keep them on anymore.
9.@mikesparks5336(2025-04-12 09:07:51)
Its a shame Reeves isn`t looking for another job
10.@semfor22(2025-04-12 09:08:42)
Shameless government, shameless incompetent politician.
11.@imbonkers3629(2025-04-12 09:09:30)
0.5% = government spending ????goes on gdp , so all the borrowing to put illegals in hotels , extra money for Ukraine, we borrowed £10.7 billion in February all that to grow 0.5% ????
12.@lloydspencer9348(2025-04-12 09:11:24)
and the Net Zero quasi-religious dogma that is another self inflicted wound.
13.@michaelhallett4110(2025-04-12 09:11:32)

17.@Steven-D-Allan(2025-04-12 09:18:44)
Probably a miscalculated 'rise' to be corrected later. Everyone else can see and feel what the reality is. Ordinary people will have to live in this nightmare!
18.@DawnK070(2025-04-12 09:20:29)
I have just subscribed. Great channel. ????
19.@paulharrison7761(2025-04-12 09:24:12)
The complaints administrator should be the first out of the door
20.@6581punk(2025-04-12 09:25:05)
Someone resigned from where I work and the interim manager said they don't think it will take very long to find someone else. That's basically an admission that there ain't many opportunities and there's a lot of people looking.
21.@bassplayer3974(2025-04-12 09:25:07)
Tick up in gdp unemployment up surely that's money out the door
22.@The_Signularity_is_coming(2025-04-12 09:25:12)
I doubt it's slowed immigration down though!
23.@GrahamJennings-d4e(2025-04-12 09:25:28)
Really who cares about Scunthorpe and the steelworks its changed hands a few times 2 dodgy countries been bailed out for millions.Till we open our coal pits we will never compete with china and other countrys till we drain our incompetent Mps and Stammer ...plus the people who work in the steel works will get all there benifits if not more in redundancys but whatever happens it will cost the tax payer again and again...
24.@markcf83(2025-04-12 09:25:45)
She got lucky with February's figures. Next month will be more revealing.....
25.@Grandad-Grumps(2025-04-12 09:30:19)
I am not fooled by half %. What I do know is after working for 40 years my good lady was made redundant and in the financial profession you could once walk from job to job. Now thanks to this pathetic excuse for a government! There are practically no jobs and it is only going to get worse.
26.@herrflick1244(2025-04-12 09:30:31)
All the cabinet should be in the dole queue and made to live off u c. No freebies, jollies, gits, perks, fuel allowances. Expenses, two homes, rent free, nothing gratis at all
27.@MunsterIrons(2025-04-12 09:31:36)
Daughter runs small business that employs 5-6, around minimal wage level or above. Plus various outsourced services.
New changes to wages/taxes has increased cost to employ by apprx £200 per person, per month.
That’s not going to mean more money in anybody’s pocket is it?
Jobs will be cut, spending will be cut, businesses will reduce in every aspect.
Some similar sized business will fold as it’s not worth the effort just to fill the government’s coffers to pay for the likes of immigration, net zero, etc.
This government are intent on fcuking the whole country.
28.@Phil-B123(2025-04-12 09:32:22)
While this government is in power, i intend on spending only on what is essential for my day to day living. Remember, our money is their power, and i intend on giving them nothing.
29.@SteveShaw-nh4sb(2025-04-12 09:35:25)
Zelda is starting to look ropey
30.@CarlAndersen-t8u(2025-04-12 09:38:18)
Starmer and Reeves are overseeing the economic destruction of this country, and theres nothing the public can do about it .
31.@James-v5r9w(2025-04-12 09:42:54)
The immigrants are causing the distruction of this country boot them all out the lazy bastards.
32.@TonyPalmer-g8t(2025-04-12 09:48:09)
We all knew that as soon as reeves gave her October budget that come this April unemployment would start rising
33.@simonweakley3479(2025-04-12 09:48:20)
It's fishy that weeks before the local elections figures come out showing Britain is booming again. I don't believe the figures, they have been manipulated somehow, tell those growth figures to British Steel Corporation, Port Talbot Steel, JLR, Nissan UK, Vauxhall Motors and Mini all heading for closure. I'm one of the army of 11 million adults not in employment soon there will be 15 million and the Ruling Class have zero answers except panic like todays recall.
34.@brianmaynard9282(2025-04-12 09:55:08)
Reeves is a idiot, her national insurance hikes have caused firms to cut down on staff so where are all these jobs for the disabled coming from, imagine if she had a brain she could be dangerous.
35.@captchaos6870(2025-04-12 09:55:12)
Liebour haven't a clue.
36.@christiandupille3690(2025-04-12 09:56:32)
….black hole….brexit….tarrifs….14 years…at this point I pity anyone who believes them
37.@joerobinson1672(2025-04-12 09:56:36)
Its official ‘Grim Reaper Reeves’ is the financial equivalent of a pandemic, ???????? well done Rach.
38.@John-h9k7x(2025-04-12 09:57:55)
Time to bring out the old poster of Labours not working.
39.@Neale-c4l(2025-04-12 09:58:32)
What this government is doing has got to be deliberate because even I can see what they are doing is damaging employment and I,am thick as shit
40.@no-oneinparticular7264(2025-04-12 10:00:04)
Who is doing the maths ?
41.@MarkGould-y8y(2025-04-12 10:02:02)
Another stunning performance by Rachel Thieves
42.@01home649(2025-04-12 10:02:56)
If its even true, its merely a blip. Employment is about to skyrocket as the latest disastrous policies kick in over the next 2 months. Then we will have a realistic view of where we are heading. Whoever follows this government at the next GE are going to have a mammoth task on their hands which will not give them a fair crack of the whip.
43.@AdrianCalcagnile(2025-04-12 10:04:00)
Labour isn’t working it’s always been the same, they will destroy whatever good growth comes , because they can’t grow economy’s !!!
44.@chlobix22(2025-04-12 10:06:41)
Dont believe the figures it's all bullshit as is Liebour.
45.@bernardloftus4982(2025-04-12 10:09:13)
No now we have Labvid.
46.@strings1950(2025-04-12 10:10:09)
I am sure Starmer, Reeves and Raynor are here for two reasons.1 to make themselves richer and 2 ,to completely ruin this country until we are overtaken and run by bloody muslims.
47.@peterbush4569(2025-04-12 10:13:04)
Poxy labour could not care less' they got there 90000 pay in there bank a year
48.@dawnhall3637(2025-04-12 10:14:53)
Trump and Brexit. Obviously!
49.@timetraveller9321(2025-04-12 10:16:59)
The calm before the storm. And reeves and starmer cannot see it coming????
50.@DerekShirreffs-g5v(2025-04-12 10:17:32)
They can just put out any figures they want. How would we know if they’re genuine or not? ????
