So this is a strike that's going on in Birmingham where Unite the Union claim that Birmingham Council, which is under massive financial pressure, essentially bankrupt, has imposed real cuts to their pay and they have gone on strike.
   They have been negotiating.
   Those negotiations have gone nowhere.
The question there about why doesn't the government get involved, I think the government is trying to get involved to get this resolved, but it is truly horrific.
There are parts of Birmingham where they'll say, well, it's actually, we're not feeling it that badly.
There's been infestations of rats and all sorts of stuff that are really, really horrible, terrible for the image of Birmingham.
And also they've now set up these sort of places where you can take your rubbish.
But there was a piece on the BBC News last night of a mile long traffic jam of people with their cars full of all their rubbish trying to take it to these temporary refuse centres.
   I mean, it's bloody awful.
Politically, I guess this echoes or sounds like this a bit of echoes of the ways that the Conservatives were able to weaponise these strikes, the late 1970s, the bins out and famously the dead going unburied and all this kind of stuff.
You know, we talk a lot about the image of the country or what have you.
   This is bad for Britain.
You know, we may think that this is where a local regional story is not.
This is something that is projecting an image of Britain.
And I think that's why it's more important than just a sort of local dispute.
It's got to get sorted out.
And then we'll see you next time.

Birmingham is a dump anyway. Plus ca change.
2.@smalltown2223(2025-04-12 17:11:54)
Absolute numpties these two. A disgraced Stewart thrown out of his party for illegal activity and a war criminal needing mental therapy.
3.@julian987r4(2025-04-12 20:12:05)
That’s Liebour councils for you.
4.@66kandFrends(2025-04-12 21:02:13)
*It's even crazier. One council department wanted a few people, 6 I believe, to relocate from one job site to another, no pay cut no redundancies, just normal departmental restructuring. The local union said these people should have been consulted first we go on strike now, and the council went '?????' and here we are.

The video editor is having fun with the sound effects.

It takes 2 generations for a 1st world country to turn into a 3rd world country. Some say that we are in generation 1.

On a separate note. Gary Stevenson seems to be making good points on the state of the UK and future. Declassified UK, Double Down News & Novaro Media also.
7.@Abzy886(2025-04-12 23:50:19)
Owen Jones has done a good job covering this on his channel and the hypocrisy of The West.
8.@Abzy886(2025-04-12 23:53:11)
Its like Israel is the leash holder, and The Western governments such as the USA and the UK, are the dogs at the end of the leashes, sad really.....
9.@diane5891(2025-04-13 00:30:34)
But Alastair, where is the money coming from?
10.@a.t652(2025-04-13 08:03:10)
The place was a shithole 20 years ago.... AC forgot to mention Birmingham council decided to lower pay because binmen are, drum roll, all men, earning a relatively good wage because it's not the most sexy job, and was skewing the gender paygap numbers, while at the same time upping the pay of mostly female office jobs.... Devil in the details not mentioned by AC....
11.@WhippetNose(2025-04-13 08:38:23)
There's plenty of money for this though...

Birmingham Council should tax the very wealthy.
13.@Sandra071162(2025-04-13 12:32:46)
It's bad for surrounding areas as well. We have long queues at tips and an increased fly tipping due to this strike. It's costing Walsall council taxpayers as we have to pay for the removal of rubbish from our lanes.
14.@kateblower876(2025-04-13 13:00:24)
Also the fact that mounds of rubbish are being left in areas of high ethnic minorities whilst 'whiter' areas are being cleaned up breeds resentment and anger. People are beginning to feel worthless.
15.@ChristianSahajpal(2025-04-13 13:56:30)
That’s crazy
16.@ruchirchaturvedi7793(2025-04-13 16:09:34)
Enjoy the Diversity ????
17.@mikejk2192(2025-04-13 16:38:43)
LOL gov is doing nothing becuase they get paid by the unions. Meanwhile the city is like the 3rd world country.
18.@AngelaStephen-c8c(2025-04-13 23:09:54)
Worse than image - what about health? I’d send in health and safety and sue the government for not protecting my health.
19.@GraemeMacDermid(2025-04-14 07:01:36)
Why is Birmingham in financial distress? There is no context here.
20.@x-marks-x5137(2025-04-14 08:09:03)
It’s worse then Napels ????
21.@ricado372(2025-04-14 13:58:41)
This is a perfect example of how wealth inequality affects us all. How can a council have no money when taxes are high? Because the richest in society have bought up the assets once owned by the council. A wealth tax is absolutely essential to stop us turning into an India or Brazil.
22.@robbielad(2025-04-14 16:58:38)
Bring back Workhouses.
And National Service.
And food rationing.
23.@DSTH323(2025-04-16 03:12:48)
Far Left deplores their own Socialist paradise.
24.@Beggingbrigade(2025-04-16 18:01:30)
The council created this actial role what the pay dispute is over, so if they hadn't created it then this would never of happened, ywt again mis managed by the council
25.@Nzwarriord(2025-04-18 14:00:41)
The image of Birmingham has been tarnished for good
26.@Subcomandante73(2025-04-18 14:47:01)
Sadly Labour has long since abandoned the working class. Too busy taking gifts from the rich.
27.@Gph0367(2025-04-18 23:13:10)
All workers deserve a decent living wage. Fed up with the huge wealth inequality that exists. Doesn't have to be this way. We are a rich country!
